What Does it Mean to “Fulfill our Sunday obligation”? Ephesians 5:18-21 (Part 2)

Every Sunday, and for many people Saturday evening, millions of Christians around the world gather for worship. We do this partially in obedience to Scripture, for we know that from the beginning we were told to “Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy.” But sadly far too many seem to gather merely to fulfill this obligation; in otherwords, “I go because I gotta go,” and then when they leave the church they return to their everyday lives, until the next weekend when once again, they go because they gotta go. But what St. Paul and the Church have always taught is that the gathering for worship is a communion of love between brothers. This is part of what weʼll be discussing today on Deep in Scripture.

How Do We Live Our Baptism in Everyday Life? Ephesians 5:18-21 (Part 1) - Jim Anderson

“He is risen! He is risen indeed!” Last Sunday was Easter Sunday, on which we gathered to celebrate the death & resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. But this celebration did not cease on Sunday, but continues, through out this Easter week, but even more so evry day for the rest of our lives. One of the key components of Easter, from the earliest days of the Church, is the reception of new members (catechumens) through baptism. And in the same way, baptism is not merely a one time event, but something we must realize and live out for the rest of our lives. This is part of what weʼll be discussing today on Deep in Scripture.

Very often the problem we face when it comes to living our lives the way we know we ought is not that we lack the knowledge of what is good and right and true, what we ought to do or not do. Rather we lack the will to follow our convictions. St. Paul once wrote, in his letter to the Romans, “I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate.” Sometimes, however, itʼs also a problem of a poorly formed conscience. This is part of what weʼll be discussing today on Deep in Scripture.

How do I live Lenten conversion? Ephesians 4:25 – 5:2 (Part 4)
Wednesday Feb 20, 2008
Wednesday Feb 20, 2008
Lent is the period of the Liturgical year in which we are called to examine our lives, our relationships, our hearts, to root out sin and bad habits, bad attitudes, anything that stands in the way of us being what Christ calls us to be. We do this through this the traditional / Scriptural acts of piety–prayer, fasting, and alms giving–but undergirding these acts must be hearts and minds centered on renewal. The acts of piety cannot change us without a heart felt conviction to change. And the place where the proverbial “rubber meets the road” in this Lenten renewal is in our reltionships with one another. The acts of piety make no difference if we donʼt get along with our neighbors. This is what weʼll discuss today on Deep in Scripture.

Living Out the Interior Conversion, Ephesians 4:25 – 5:2 (Part 3)

How do we get a handle on conflict? How do we live out our faith, our commitment to Christ, when we just canʼt seem to get along with others in the Church, or in our work, or frankly within our own families? In worship we stand and sit next to brothers and sisters in the faith, who have been sealed like us with the Holy Spirit in baptism, yet sometimes when we turn and greet each other in the sign of peace, our relational connection is no deeper than our surface smiles. What can we do? Well, this is what weʼll learn from St. Paul today on Deep in Scripture.

Living Out the Interior Conversion, Ephesians 4:25 – 5:2 (Part 2) - Jim Anderson

A very important, essential aspect of our being faithful followers of Jesus Christ— faithful members of His Body, the Church—is our interior holiness. As St. Paul stated in Chapter 4 of Ephesians, we are to “be renewed in the spirit of [our] minds” and we are to “put on the new nature, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.” But for this internal conversion of heart and mind to truly make a difference, especially in our relationship with God, it must also change how we relate to one another in the Body of Christ. To paraphrase St. John, if we canʼt get along with each other, how can we expect to get along with God? This is what weʼll be discussing today on Deep in Scripture.
